Determining Ideal Disinfectants

Determining Ideal Disinfectants

How are disinfectants being assessed in their fight against SARS-CoV-2?

Reducing the risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 relies on effective cleaning and disinfection, along with continued social distancing practices. The majority of the disinfectants on the EPA N List have not been proven to actually kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The disinfectants and products on this list are “expected” to kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus, not proven to do so. So why are these products “expected” to kill the SARS-CoV-2 Virus? Where is the proof behind these products being added to a national well-known resource?

A statement put out by the Association for Biosafety and Biosecurity says:

While the products included in List N: Disinfectants for Use Against SARS-CoV-2 have not been tested against SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19, they are expected to be effective based on:

▪ Demonstrated efficacy against a harder-to-kill virus (such as parvo virus, Hepatitis A Virus, poliovirus);

▪ Qualified for the emerging viral pathogens claim; or

▪Demonstrated efficacy against another human coronavirus similar to SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 is a new virus.

Such pathogens are often unavailable commercially for laboratory testing

Wait what??? have not been tested against SARS-CoV-2?? The importance of testing your disinfectant’s effectiveness against the actual SARS-CoV-2 virus is imperative. Proper and informed decisions cannot be made concerning the effectiveness of your disinfecting methods without proper validation. IWC’s Covid-19 Environmental Test provides the appropriate verification. Our Covid-19 Environmental test uses the fastest and most accurate testing method - q-PCR.

IWC has conducted numerous field studies determining the effectiveness of many of the products on the EPA N list. We have found that some of these cleansers work, while others do not mitigate the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Using a disinfectant that has not been proven to actually kill the SARS-CoV-2, is the biggest snipe hunt of 2020. If your efforts for extra disinfection are not effective in the mitigation of SARS-CoV-2, why would you use them in your facility?

IWC's Covid-19  Environmental Test provides accurate, sensitive and fast identification of the presence of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. IWC’s test can be used in environments including surfaces, air, and water. Testing these environments is the only way to ensure your environment has been successfully remediated of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Determining the health of your facility and the importance of keeping your employees and patrons safe should be your top priority.
