Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What Does CDC ELITE Program Accreditation Mean?

A: CDC ELITE Program Lab status recognizes laboratories that have demonstrated exceptional proficiency in isolating and identifying Legionella bacteria from water samples using culture methods. To earn this certification, labs must successfully identify Legionella in annual proficiency panels provided by the CDC. This designation assures clients that the laboratory meets rigorous standards for accuracy and reliability in Legionella testing

Q: How often should I test my facility for Legionella?

A: The frequency of Legionella testing should be determined by a risk assessment of your facility’s water systems. High-risk systems—such as cooling towers, hot water systems, spas, and decorative fountains—may require monthly testing, while lower-risk systems could be tested quarterly or semi-annually.

Facilities with vulnerable populations or a history of Legionella issues should test more frequently.

To ensure your testing schedule complies with local regulations and industry guidelines, work with us at IWC Innovations

Q: What happens if Legionella is detected?

A: If Legionella is detected in your water system, immediate action is required to protect health and safety. This typically involves:

  • Notifying relevant stakeholders and authorities

  • Implementing remediation measures such as system disinfection, temperature adjustments, or flushing

  • Reviewing and updating your water management plan

  • Conducting follow-up testing to confirm remediation effectiveness

Q: How quickly can I get results from a CDC ELITE Program Legionella testing lab?

A: Traditional Legionella culture testing in a CDC ELITE-certified lab typically takes 7-14 days due to the incubation period required for accurate identification. Culture testing can also identify Legionella subgroups  Legionella species and serogroups, including those beyond Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, which is the most common cause of Legionnaires’ disease.

However, some labs also offer rapid testing methods, such as PCR or lateral flow tests, which can deliver results in as little as 24 hours. These rapid methods may be used for screening, with culture confirmation as needed.
